African Heritage Dancers and Drummers

The African Heritage Dancers & Drummers were one of the first “Black Performing Arts,” companies originating in the Inner City Shaw communities of Metro-Washington, D.C., as a “Black Cultural Awareness” project in the early 1960’s.

Originally composed of primarily community residents, the African Heritage Company has grown to include performers from around the world, including the continent of Africa.

African Heritage Dancers & Drummers Dance and Music play an important part in the life of African peoples.

African Heritage Dancers & Drummers Dance and Music play an important part in the life of African peoples.

Dance and Music is performed to worship God and Ancestors, to make hard work easier, and to celebrate important events in the community,
such as Initiations or Coming of Age ceremonies, Marriages, Funerals,Births, Deaths and to celebrate the harvest.
